Autodrivers in Chennai. The very thought of them conjures up a menacing looking guy who will quote sky high fares to drop you at your destination. Or so I thought. Today changed all that for me and I will never be completely sure to paint all auto drivers with the same brush.
Yesterday I discovered to my shock and horror that my wallet had gone missing. After searching both my workplace and home, I realized that I had well and truly lost it-either it had been pinched during my daily bus commute to work or I had misplaced it somewhere and it was gone forever. The silver lining was that I had very little cash in it, but my ID and ATM card were very much in there, alongwith some pix of family and friends (aside: Jerry Seinfeld once said, if a woman is ever caught speeding on the highway, she may not have her driver's licence, but she will definitely say, "oh i dont have my licence, but here's a pic of every friend I've ever known..and oh here's our family dog..and so on..and the cop is very likely to say,'that's fine ma'am, no need for your licence, you seem like a popular person, please go ahead, sorry for stopping you!)
The wallet Seinfeld was talking about could very well have been mine..So anyway, today was a rather bleak day to start with..it began very early in the morning with me making a last ditch effort at searching everywhere for my wallet and just as I was about to face the task of cancelling my ATM card and applying for a new ID and so on, I got a call from a stranger saying an auto guy had found my wallet lying on the road and would give it to me in the next hour! I was speechless with shock and surprise. The stranger wouldnt give me his name, only the auto number of the guy who would deliver my wallet to me.
One hour later my wallet and me are reunited as a smiling auto guy said he had found it lying at the signal crossing where I cross the road to come to work.
There is some good in this world..really. :)

This is like experiencing being an Anton Chekov short story character. Nothing like this happened to me in a while, so I haven't been writing. Good excuse. hmm....
