Musings

Two movies one theme I'm slowly working through my movie watchlist. Some thoughts from movies watched this weekend. Movie #1 A Telugu movie called Mahanati a biopic of one of the Southern film industry's superstars, Savitri. The movie presents the story of her rise to stardom and her tragic personal life in the face of unparalleled success in a stellar movie career. Movie #2 is one of the finest animation movies I have ever seen, if not the best ever. Loving Vincent tells the story of Van Gogh's final days, his struggles as an artist and his incredible life. Both movies seen this weekend made me think about the burden of genius, social structures and cultural norms that can make, as well as unfortunately, destroy genius. Both movies dealt with issues like alcoholism and melancholia, and how these illnesses left unchecked cut short the incredible lives of both the main characters. Another running theme was the structure of the story in both movies. An overarching narrative that unravels the story for the audience. In Mahanati, it is the journalist Madhura Vani looking to tell Savitri's story in a kind and honest manner while in Loving Vincent we see Armand Roulin wanting to explore van Gogh's final few days. It is through the eyes of Armand and Vani that we get to see the life of the main characters in both movies. It is through them that we come away spellbound, inspired and completely in awe of what these two artistic greats in their respective fields of art have contributed to the world. #Sundaymusings
